What Is a Laminar Airflow Workstation?

Laminar airflow workstations, also known as laminar flow hoods (LAFWs), are designed to provide a clean and particle-free environment for sensitive processes such as pharmaceutical preparation, electronics assembly, and microbiological work. These enclosures work by directing HEPA-filtered air in a constant, unidirectional flow across the work surface, effectively sweeping away airborne contaminants. Laminar airflow protects the product from contamination, but unlike biosafety cabinets, these workstations do not offer protection for personnel or the surrounding environment. As such, they are best suited for non-hazardous tasks where maintaining a sterile field is critical.

Horizontal Laminar Flow Workstation (Airflow Description)

In a horizontal laminar flow workstation, clean air is drawn in from the room, passes through a HEPA filter located at the back of the hood, and flows horizontally across the work surface toward the operator.

This design provides a constant stream of particle-free air directly over the materials being handled, minimizing the risk of contamination from airborne particulates. However, because the airflow moves toward the user, horizontal LAFWs are not suitable for work involving hazardous substances, as the user may be exposed to any materials being handled.

Vertical Laminar Flow Workstation (Airflow Description)

Vertical laminar flow workstations draw room air in through the top of the unit, where it passes through a HEPA filter and flows downward in a vertical stream over the work area. This top-down airflow provides effective protection for the product while directing any potential contaminants downward and away from the operator's face.

Vertical airflow is advantageous when working with taller equipment or materials that may obstruct horizontal flow. It also slightly reduces the risk of exposure to the operator compared to horizontal flow designs, although it still does not provide full personnel or environmental protection.
